My Dogs

My family was had three dogs in my life. Lady was our first dog. We got her when I was 2 years old. She was my dog. She went almost everywhere with me. My mother tells a story about how I was playing with her down by our creek and I came in saying I saw a bear with babies. Well as I kept telling the story the bears changed from black bears to grizzly bears, and finally to polar bears. Well my mother told me to take Lady and go play with the bears. Well I did go out and play with the bears (actually I was so young I don't remember). Over the next few days my mother found out that a bear cub was hit on the highway about 2 miles from our house. Down the same creek from our house and the neighbor had a bear and 2 cubs in her strawberry patch. Lady was there to protect me. It's obvious I'm still right here to write this story.

Lady was always there when I was waiting for the bus, when I got home from school, and to lay with me when I was watching TV. Once when I was waiting for the bus, she tried to protect me from the school bus. I really didn't want to go to school that day. The school bus did ended up running her over. I wish I could tell you that was the only time I nearly saw Lady die, but it wasn't. I would swear this dog had nine lives.

When I was 18 I finally ended up putting lady to sleep. That may have been that hardest thing I had to do. Before I did this I made my parents promise to get my youngest brother D a new dog before I go back from basic training. They did get D a new dog before I got home that summer and actually sent me a picture of it. I still remember that picture of D and Rascel hanging in my wall locker in basic training.

I really didn't know Rascel that well. I just remember the Rascel liked to pee when my brother's friend N would show up at our house. Well when Rascel died D didn't want to get a dog right away. When he did he found us Pelle.

Now we have Pelle and he is fast becoming my dog (sorry D). Pelle is getting old now. I think he is losing his hearing.
